What is Switchable Electric Glass?

Switchable Electric Glass (also known as privacy glass, switchable glass, intelligent glass or smart glass) utilises next generation glass technology to control the opacity of a glass pane. Whether the glass technology is controlled remotely, via sensor or manually it allows occupants to control light, glare and heat passing through exterior and interior glass surfaces.

The technology reduces the need for tiresome curtains and blinds whilst also being more hygienic and easier to clean. Switchable Electric Glass is a solid-state technology with no moving parts to wear out or break so installations are generally durable if installed by a professional electric glass supplier.  The applications of Switchable Electric Glass include solar control and privacy control and the technology is generally used for large buildings in the commercial, retail, security, transport, healthcare and hospitality sectors. And let us not forget to mention upmarket private homes – such ‘smart homes’ are a testimony to the scope of home automation available in today’s market.

Speaking in architectural terms this new electric glass medium can be applied to partition screens, windows, roof-lights, doors and projection screens with an economical use of space. In security terms there are applications in corporate receptions, teller screens and secure goods transport.

Switchable glass addresses environmental concerns by operating at a low working voltage whilst reducing cooling and heating costs for the building in one system. A ‘smart’ building facade can be set to allow more light and heat in on the cold winter months and reduce the amount of heat and light allowed to pass through the glass surface in warmer summer months. This reduced carbon footprint and the associated temperature regulation savings is a huge advantage in larger buildings.

The available means for changing the opacity of such Switchable Electric Glass is via wall switches, remote controls, movement sensors, light sensors or timers. Quite often intelligent glass installations are used to create boardroom and showroom spaces at the flick of a button and whilst giving areas an open and bright feel when not in use. Such privacy applications can be particularly useful in regions where there is a cultural prerogative to increase privacy such as the Middle East and some parts of Asia.
